What Do You Do With Old Books?

This is my entry to Techie She’s Lucky Blogger Weekly Giveaways Week No. 5. This week’s prize is one year free blog hosting sponsored by MaBelle of Treasure Box.

This school opening, one of our biggest expense is school books (second to tuition). With 4 children going to school, we spent almost P30,000 for books alone.  I'm not complaining that we bought our children the books they need. When it comes to studying, books are your treasure of knowledge.

What bothers me is that at the end of the school year, we are left with lots of used books. What can we do with these old books?  There are 5 things which we can do with our old books (these include not only school books) that I would like to share.

1. Reuse.  I remember during my school days, I reuse the textbooks of my big sister. Back then, I can reuse some of the textbooks since my sister rarely writes on them. But nowadays, most books of my children have end of chapter questionnaires or activities which they should answer.  So, how can the next sibling use them again?

I could just throw them away because of the added clutter in the house, but I still keep some of them. Sometimes, my children still use them for reference. Or when they have a project which needs some photos, I scan through the old books for photos and get them. At least, I would save printer ink since I don't need to use our printer for printing photos.

2. Sell. During college, I like to buy reference books for my subjects. I make sure that I take good care of them so that they will not depreciate that much. Then at the end of the year or at the beginning of the next school year, I sell some of them. I sell those which are not included in my course's major subjects like Philosophy, History or General Science.  There's an organization in the school campus that buys used books.  Whatever money I got back for the books, I used them again to buy school books.

If you Google search for places where you can sell used books, you can find a few online stores like Cash-4Books (featured in The Early Show and Dr. Phil), Swap Books and FEDS. In the Philippines, you can try selling them in stores selling second hand books in Recto. Or you may also sell them on Buy and Sell websites in the Philippines like Sulit and eBay Philippines.

3. Give or Donate.  This past two weeks, the school of our children had a book drive. Since their library is still new, they asked if the students have any books that they could donate to the library.  Our children kept asking us if we have any books to give. I looked up some books and, yes, they donated a few.  Why hold on to the books if other children can benefit from them?

Aside from your school library, you can also donate books to a public library or charity like the Bridge to Asia which sends books to Asian countries where they are scarce like Cambodia and Vietnam or the Releaf Project in the Philippines.

4. Swap books. If you like buying and reading books, you may want to consider swapping or trading books to save some money on buying books. The idea behind this is you join a book swapping group or membership site, list the books you have, and when someone requests your books, you mail it to him. By doing so, you earn credit which you can use to request a book that you like from other members. Membership in this type of sites is free, but you cover the shipping fees of the book.

If you want to swap books, check out Chango Books or this page which lists 10 Best Websites to Swap books.

5. Recycle.  If there's no other way to reuse, sell or swap the books, especially Workbooks, then you can consider them for recycling. Look for recycling centers or junk shops that accepts them. If you want to try, you can also recycle them yourself to make handmade paper which you can use or maybe sell.

Recycling helps to reduce the cutting of trees, energy consumption and the amount of paper going to landfills. I also found this webpage where you can find 10 Creative Ways to Recycle Old Books.  You may want to try some of the author's ideas.

Lastly, I am just wondering whether it would be possible for book publishers to make a separate answer booklet to complement textbooks so that the students would not need to answer on the book itself.  This would make the textbooks reusable. If families could just borrow the old textbook and buy the answer booklet only, it will give more savings for the family.  Are there any book publisher out there who cares not just for the profit they will make but also for the environment and the service they will do to lessen the burden on school expenses?

Also, can the schools and teachers contribute to the reuse of old books? If they could just instruct the students to answer on their notebooks and not on the books, it would help preserve the book.  Also, is it really necessary to change the books almost every year? I have 4 kids and if they change the books that often, the younger sibling cannot use the older sibling's books.

Well, the last two paragraphs are just rants and suggestions from a mother with 4 school children who wants to save some cash.  Every centavo saved goes a long way.

What Makes a Home Blessed?

Family. Image by Billy Alexander, stock.xchng
One time when I was organizing my files, I found this printed poem. The poem was one page long with no title (maybe it has but it was not printed on the paper) and the author is unknown. I like how it described a Blessed Home. It starts from the kind of relationship the husband and wife has with each other and with their God.  As I often hear quoted "A successful marriage looks like a triangle: A man, A woman and God."

I have copied the poem below.  I hope it will help us reflect on the kind of family or marriage we have right now and how we can improve it. God created the family for the purpose of establishing His kingdom and the devil has been trying to destroy the family since the beginning of time and is succeeding in many ways, just listen to the news.

Speaking for myself, I want to preserve my family and be a vessel in fulfilling God's purposes. Through this poem, I can see that there's still a lot of room for improvement in terms of how we live as a family.  How about you?

Blessed are the husband and wife who continue to be affectionate, considerate and loving after the wedding bells have ceased ringing.

Blessed are the husband and wife who are as polite and courteous to one another as they are to their friends.

Blessed are they who have a sense of humor, for this attribute will be a handy shock absorber.

Blessed are they who love their mates more than any other person in the world and who joyfully fulfill their marriage vows of lifetime fidelity and mutual helpfulness to one another.

Blessed are they who attain parenthood, for children are an heritage of the Lord.
Blessed are they who remember to thank God for their food before they partake of it and who set apart some time each day for reading the Bible and prayer.

Blessed are those mates who never speak loudly to one another and who make their home a place where 'seldom is heard a discouraging word.'

Blessed are the husband and wife who faithfully attend the worship service of their local church and work together in the church for the advancement of Christ's Kingdom.

Blessed are the husband and wife who can work out problems of adjustments without interference from relatives.

Blessed is the couple who has a complete understanding about financial matters and who have worked out a perfect partnership with all money under the control of both.

Blessed are the husband and wife who humbly dedicate their lives and their home to Christ and who practice the teachings of Christ in the home by being unselfish, loyal and loving.

Why Would I Want to Levitate?

This is my official entry to LEVY's contest.

LEVITATE. According to Webster, it means to rise and float in the air in apparent deviance of gravity.  Some of the pictures below give an approximate visualization of what levitation means. The first one is Janel suspended in mid-air. She was jumping when her sister, Kristel, took this snapshot.

Kristel took a snapshot of Janel jumping.

The second one is a picture taken when we were in the Philippines. While I was getting our travel tax exemption, our kids and their cousins went to the Rizal Park Children's Playground nearby. They were jumping for joy as they had fun playing slides, swing, riding animal statues, etc.

Emmuel and Yuan (the boys with eyeglasses) with their cousins jumping for joy.
The last picture shows a hint of what kind of fun we had in our 2011 summer vacation. It was taken when we had fun swimming in a private Cavite resort. Our nephews had fun jumping over and over again into the pool.  It sure looks like they are flying - levitating, right?

When I think about levitating, the fictional characters Peter Pan and Tinker Bell comes to my mind. They are characters which are popularly known for levitating/flying. When encouraging Wendy and his brothers to fly with the help of some faith, trust and pixie dust, he just told them to think about any happy little thought.

So, happy thoughts can make you feel like levitating. Have you ever experienced that? Isn't it that when you are in the midst of such a happy situation, you feel like flying or walking on cloud 9? Think about when you were in love. Think about when you received news of winning something - a prize, an award, or a promotion.  In these situations, who wouldn't want to levitate?

But there are times when I think I don't want anything to do with this levitating.  I remember every time I was one-month pregnant, I felt like levitating and nauseating.  Not that I don't want the great news of having a baby, just the physical feeling associated with it.  I also remember my mom told me about 3 years ago that she had this feeling of levitating or floating in the air. Then a year and a half after, she had a heart attack and suffered clotting in her artery.  It was really scary, but thank God, she survived and is getting much better now.

I can say, then, that there's a good side and a bad side associated to levitation. But there's a levitation that all of us must prepare for. The levitation I'm talking about is the time when our soul and spirit would levitate from our physical body. Yes, someday we will all face the fact that we will die. And we should be ready when that time comes.

The Bible says that there are just two destinations when that time comes, either we levitate to heaven or to hell. Which would you prefer to go to? Jesus claims that He is the only way, the truth and the life. No one can go to the Father (heaven) except by Him. Do you believe this? I do and if you want to know more about this, just visit this link Get Saved Today.

By the way, this is an entry to a contest where the first prize is $200. I really hope I could win so that I can make someone feel like levitating.  Someone I know and care about (identity is kind of confidential) is really in need of money for medical treatment, so if I win, I will give the prize money to this person.  Please help me win by leaving a comment to this post. Thank you so much!

Cellphone Review - Samsung GT-B5722

This is my entry to Techie She’s Lucky Blogger Weekly Giveaways Week No. 3. This week’s prize is one year free blog hosting sponsored by JDMaBelleverlasting of “Hope, Faith and Love of a Stay at Home Mother”

I'm not very particular about the type of cellphone I have. For the past two years, I've been using a simple Nokia cellphone, probably the cheapest in the market. Anyway, I just use it for SMS and phone calls.

However, during our summer vacation in the Philippines, I accidentally left it in the car's dashboard which is parked under direct sunlight from 9 am -2 pm. So, when we got back, it doesn't work anymore.  So, I have no option but to buy a new one.

It was only last Wednesday when we were able to buy a new cellphone for me. We bought this Samsung GT-B7522.

Samsung GT-B5722.   Image from Samsung.com
When we came to the store, I actually didn't really know what particular brand and model to buy. But my primary consideration was to buy a cellphone that allows dual SIM operation.  Since we are an OFW family staying abroad where we have our local SIM and we got our SIM from the Philippines on roaming (text from the Philippines is cheaper this way - only P1), we thought of just buying one phone that allows 2 SIMs.

There were 2 Samsung models that operate on dual SIM sold at the store. But the one we bought allows the receipt of SMS from the 2 SIMs simultaneously (the other model doesn't allow this, you have to take out the battery and exchange the position of the SIM cards). In case of 2 simultaneous incoming calls, the other call is notified as "call waiting" on the screen.

I really like my new cellphone. Aside from the above feature I mentioned, other features include 2.8" Touch Screen, 3.2 MP camera with flash and various camera settings, Image editor, FM radio player, MP3 player,  MP4 video player, etc.  To read on the complete features, visit the website of Samsung or go to Amazon where it is sold $100 cheaper than the list price.

But what I like the most is really its dual SIM feature. Maybe I could also get another one like this and give it to my Mother as a gift. She uses 2 SIMs from different mobile network in the Philippines, which I really don't understand why.  Sometimes, I get confused on which cellphone number to SMS her. Well, that's an idea that I still have to think through...

There's Nothing As Great As Being Together

These are some of the photos we had last vacation. They are pictures of our family enjoying together a dip in the private pool of a kind relative of ours to beat the heat. There's nothing really as great as being together as a family! Of course, it's not always fun like this in the pictures. The everyday reality is far from what the pictures convey. But still....

It's Great to be Together

I know that it's school days again and we just spent a handful of money in sending them to school here (abroad). Sometimes, I'm contemplating whether it's better to stay home in the Philippines because it is pretty expensive to send children to school here. (My budget says it was about Php250 per child per day [take note: tuition only] and we have 4 children going to school).  However, if we (the kids and I) stay in the Philippines, that would mean we would really miss Daddy; we would have to make a huge adjustment (to the weather, to the culture and lifestyle, we don't have a house yet, I don't know how to drive, etc.

SO.... if we could manage to be together, it's best to be together. This set-up won't be forever, of course, especially when the children are grown up, they would eventually have to go. That's why, hubby and I wanted to enjoy them first while they are still young. Besides, there's nothing like a father and a mother's love when it comes to taking care of the children, right?

Do you agree with me that There's NOTHING as great as being together?

This is my entry for Daddy Yashiro's Journal's 3rd Blogoversary Contest: A BLOG A BABY. Come and join, there are lots of prizes to be won.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the sponsors! For the participants take time to visit them.

Summer Vacation 2011 Round Up

In a day or two, my kids will be back to school again. Summer vacation will be officially over. What a great vacation we had this year since we went to the Philippines for a 5-week vacation.  I think what my children enjoyed the most is the hanging out with their cousins. We brought to the Philippines their Nintendo Wii and they had lots of fun taking turns in playing.  They also went together biking, riding the wonder wheels in Mall of Asia, swimming, playing basketball, and a lot more gigs.

Biking at the Riverbanks, Marikina
Riding the Wonder Wheels in Mall of Asia
Aside from that, I am glad that they were able to do some of the Summer Vacation Ideas I listed in a past blog post. We didn't have the time and perfect logistics to get our children enrolled in any short courses or sports clinic but they learned something anyway during the vacation.

Emmuel (he's the one in white t-shirt) learned to play a little basketball with their cousins. He even got to play one game in the mini basketball league his cousins joined. Up to now he is so enthusiastic in learning the sport but for now he just plays it on Wii.
Emmuel is playing basketball.

Yuan, on the other hand, learned basic swimming when we went swimming in a private resort in Cavite. His cousins encouraged him to learn how-to.
Yuan learned to swim.
The other 2 girls of the family, Kristel and Janel, were also part of all these enjoyments. But they also had some sessions of doing arts and crafts when my sister pitched in looking after them (my husband and I had to go somewhere).  She used to teach kids art classes during summer. She taught them how to use the water color pencil and some tips on how to make nice watercolor paintings. She also guided them in making some clay moldings.

I wish I took pictures of their projects myself. I thought my sister uploaded it to Facebook but I can't find them.  Sayang! My sister said that Janel had a good hand and sense of taste in art color. Since I can't find the photos, let me just share with you one drawing that Janel made early this year.
Janel's drawing - what do you think is it?
I really enjoyed myself this vacation. I had a break from home routine chores and childcare.  Thanks to all the family (especially nanay and mommy) who prepared the food for us and the aunts and cousins who took care of my 5 children.

I also thank God because my mom, age 69, who had angioplasty last year is getting much better. We also had the chance to go with her to the doctor and praise God she is having a fast recovery.  My father, who is 74 years old, is still going strong.

We really enjoyed the company of our family in the Philippines and we will surely miss them.

The only downside maybe of this vacation is the huge expense. Would you believe up to 6 figures for just 5 weeks? Whew! Thank God for the provision. Also, I gained more pounds than what I've lost in the first quarter of the year. Waah! I'm back to square one.

Now, it's back to reality. I'll be as busy as a bee again in the home but I'll keep on working as if working for the Lord.  Again, thank You, Lord, for the many blessings you showered us this past vacation.

Blessed Birthday to Yuan

Today is the birthday of Yuan, my 2nd son. I would just like to post his picture here. He's now 9 years old. Wow! He's a big boy now.  He's one of God's blessings to me.

Happy 9th Birthday, Yuan!
May God bless you, my son, with another year of good health and success in everything you do. Continue to trust and follow after Jesus, okay?

That's it for now... I still have to prepare something for his little dinner celebration tonight.

Stay at Home Blessings Blog Makeover | Grab My Badge

Time flies so fast. Our 5-week vacation in the Philippines is over. It was really great to have some break. But now I'm back blogging.  I would share some pictures and thoughts about our vacation in my next blog post/s.

In this post, I would just like to say that I gave my blog another makeover.  When I was in the Philippines, I took the opportunity to ask my sister who is a graduate of Fine Arts to make a header and a banner for this blog.  Thanks so much, sis!

I was not able to do the makeover in the Philippines. It was only last night when I worked on my new blog design. This is how it looks now.  What do you think? You think, I need to change anything else? I'm not really an expert in designing.

Stay at Home Blessings New Blog Design
I think this header gives my blog a more personal touch. Also, since I'm using the Blogger template designer, I could easily change the color and layout of this blog if I want to. It was also good to learn how to design blogs using the Blogger template designer. Maybe I could share some how-tos in later blog posts.

Below is the new 125x125 blog banner that my sister designed.  Anyone would like to grab my badge? Just drop me a line in the comment section and I'll grab your blog badge, too (as long as your blog is wholesome  and somewhat in a similar niche as mine).

Got to go.

Count your blessings...
