30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge Update After 2 Weeks

It's been raining lately and it's getting colder and colder over here. Taking a bath is beginning to be a struggle even though we have turned the water heater on. How tempting it is also just to sleep and relax. The classes of my children have been suspended also for 2 days now since yesterday, so they're here with me at home.

This post is just an update of how my 30 Hubs in 30 Days challenge is going. So far, I'm not doing a good job. It's now Day 18 and I've only published 6 hubs. You may be asking why? Well, I've just been into the challenge for 4 days when opportunities were given to me to do some freelance work. I just couldn't say no so I was detracted from writing my hubs. Also, I find it difficult to write on weekends since my children are all here.

Anyway, I'm still keeping the challenge and would like to see how many I could still write in the next 12 days. I hope you could also read what I have written so far. Here are the topics and links
  1. How to be a Babysitter?
  2. How to Get a Babysitter?
  3. Babysitting Games Toys and Activities for Infants Checklist
  4. Babysitting Games Toys and Activities for Infants 6-12 Months
  5. Babysitting Games Toys and Activities for Toddlers
  6. How to Remove Stains in Clothes

By the way, I also received another $52 from the Hubpages ad program (this is aside from the Adsense earnings from HubPages) this November after receiving $65 just last September. Nice to get the extra $50 or so every other month.  Sorry, I'm not posting any image proof.

That's it for this post. See you around.

Faithful Blogging Prompts: What's Your Favorite Christian Movie?

Lately, I enlisted Stay at Home Blessings in the Faithful Bloggers directory. More than just getting a backlink, I find that it is great to be connected with other Christian bloggers. I also joined a giveaway they hosted about a month ago or so and I won an ebook entitled "30 Days to an Organized Home" by Moms in a Blog.

Now, I'm joining Faithful Blogging Prompts (from time to time). It's like a meme which Courtney starts each week giving bloggers an idea on what to post about.

They are now in the Faithful Blogging Prompt #30, and the topic to write about is your favorite Christian movie. The topic is so timely since I just happened to watch my favorite Christian movie the other day. It is entitled Fireproof wherein Kirk Cameron is one of the actors. I find it a really touching movie and is perfect for couples and couples-to-be. It communicates the truth that "A successful marriage looks like a triangle: A man, a woman and God." It teaches that the husband and wife should not give up on their marriage but should try to work things out with God's help. I really, really like it.

I have embedded a part of the movie which I really like.

I am also a great fan of animated movies. There are a lot of cartoons that the children can watch that teaches Christian values. My favorites include the animated movie series by Max Lucado - Hermie and Friends.

How about you? Have you watched any of these Christian films?

Child Development: Knowing My Child in her Primary Years

To continue with the Child Development series of posts here, the next state of growth is Middle Childhood also known as the Primary stage. My 3rd child, Kristel, is in this stage. She's now 7 years old and is in Grade 1. Let's see how she and other children here age is like.

Middle Childhood / Primary (6-8 years old) - Horizons Broaden

Kristel playing in their school's Palarong Pinoy.
Physically.  A primary child now has greater muscular control and accuracy. This makes walking, running, climbing, throwing almost automatic. Because of this, the child has more freedom for mental growth. She still likes to play especially those which explain how things work and those which develop specific skills and not just for the sake of fun.

Mentally. The child has become more observant. She especially notices when adults makes a mistake, like when dad makes a wrong pronunciation, wrong grammar, etc. She still doesn't understand every new thing, though sometimes she asks as if she does. She often think literally and just memorize facts even without understanding it completely. She learns new concepts by relating it to previous knowledge. She's more friendly now and likes to learn with them because they go through the same experiences so they understand each other.

Socially and Emotionally. Since the child is now going to school, she has found more friends to play with and is not a loner anymore. But she chooses the activities she does. What boys like such as playing kites, boats and spaceships are different from what girls play with like dolls and miniature houses. She will do whatever it takes to get the approval of grown-ups. She like it when people honestly praise her accomplishments. She also likes it when her friends like her. When she's with them, it helps her not to focus on her frustrations from unperfected skills unlike when she's working alone.

Kristel likes hanging out with a couple of friends. Though, she's a quiet type of person, especially in school. She likes doing things especially when she gets the approval of her teacher. When she gets home from school, she proudly shares with me her experiences when her teacher praises her and or when she does a good job.

Spiritually. When the primary child listens to stories, she now wonders and ask "Is it really true?" She is very observant between what is taught and what is practiced. She is frustrated by contradictions and may not obey when taught by parents or teachers to pray when they don't. The readiness for spiritual decision (like whether to believe in Jesus or not) depends on what she learns from home, the church and personal application of the Word of God. She can recognize her own sin and she's old enough to believe that Jesus Christ wants to save her from sin. She can understand the gospel or message of God's salvation when presented simply.

So, it is our role as parents to live a life that would model our faith because our children are watching closely. We should also be ready to guide them in knowing the truth shared in the Bible or the gospel. I don't believe that a person is already a Christian just because the parents are Christians. That is a personal decision that the child would make. We should not push the child to believe in Christ or make false decisions about it. Though as a child we are teaching them the ways of being a Christian. But the time would come that they would have to make their own decision if they would follow Christ or not. It is better to talk to them personally about it and encourage them into making the right spiritual decision.

Because Kristel is exposed to Christian music since she was a child, she really enjoys singing them. She also now loves to play Christian songs using the organ or guitar. I pray that someday soon, she will be a mature Christian woman who will be mightily used by God to share His love to the world.

Child Development: Knowing My Kindergartener

After the Preschooler and Nursery stage comes the Early Childhood or Kindergarten stage. My 4th child, Janel, is presently at this stage. She is now 5 years old and in Kindergarten 1. So, how do we describe a child who is undergoing this stage?

Early Childhood | Kindergarten (4-5 Years Old)

Janel enjoys biking at age 4.
Physically. A kindergartener keeps growing her arms and legs. She likes to do a lot of running and playing. She also learn best by imitative play. She uses her imagination to play pretend. Sometimes, she is a princess, on other occasions, she is a doctor.

Mentally. When the child starts learning to say more words, you just can't stop hearing her talk and ask never-ending questions. My kids usually ask the why questions when they were at this stage. That's how they learn best - by getting answers to their many questions. Kindergarteners have an outstanding curiosity and keen imagination. Usually, when the child's think cap is on, she sees pictures in her brain and see them as if they are the real thing.

Socially and Emotionally. At this stage, the kindergartener begins to enjoy playing with other children who are of the same age. She still displays some tinge of selfishness, though she's beginning to understand that tantrums and tears don't always work to get what she wants. Now, she also understands more that she should not do bad behaviors such as biting, hitting, pinching and shoving just to get some attention. Slowly, she is learning to overcome her self-centeredness. She is learning to work as a team with her peers and friends.

Janel likes being with her friends and usually asks "Am I your friend?" seemingly to get her friend's approval. She still cries a lot when she doesn't get her way especially when she is with her friends. She still needs to learn more that she can't always get what she wants that way.

Princess Janel
Spiritually. It is very easy for the child to believe everything she is told. When asked, she usually answers truthfully. She loves to listen to stories. She believes them as something real that she unconsciously act it out when retelling it. This stage is the best time to help her learn important Christian values. She should be given me a lot of opportunities to exercise sharing and doing things with others, telling the truth, praying, worshiping through songs or poems, dealing with anger and developing self-discipline. Telling Bible stories about Jesus will introduce Jesus to the child as a loving friend and a helper who loves her.

Janel usually identifies with the Bible stories she hears and points it out when she finds a certain situation related to the story. By letting Janel hear me when I pray, taught her to pray, too. Now, she is able to say simple prayers especially that of praying for someone sick. This is indeed a great opportunity to mold a child in godliness and Christlikeness.

The next post on this series of Child Development will be about the Middle Childhood (6-8 years old).

30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge

Today, I challenged myself to do the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge in HubPages. I remember putting on my goals for 2011 that I would like to write more hubs or articles in HubPages. However, I have not done much writing. So, I'm taking this challenge right now.

It seems that now is the perfect time that I do this. The image on the left says "I'm doing the Hub Challenge because I lost my job." That is true. I used to have 3 part-time freelancer jobs, but now, I only have one. So, I could use the extra time to better use writing hubs.

I'm still sure if I can finish this challenge because I am not really a fast writer like some who can write 2-3 articles per day. But I believe that 1-2 articles per day is doable.  I do hope that I can become a better writer by the time I have written 30 hubs. That's my primary goal. This can also help me improve my writing output if I am to do more freelance writing jobs or blogging in the future.

This writing project will also serve as a test to know how financially profitable HubPages really is as a writing platform. You can read my latest review of HubPages here. I hope I can give another optimistic review by the end of this challenge.

To all my blog readers, I hope you would support me in this writing project. I need you to cheer me on because I need all the motivation that I can get. Sometimes, I can still get sidetracked by procrastination among many other things. I would update you once a week of my progress with the hubs that I have written.

To start off this day, my hub for Day 1 is How to be a Babysitter. Hope you can read it as well.

Child Development: Knowing My Preschooler and Nursery Child

This is my entry to Techie She’s Lucky Blogger Weekly Giveaways Week No. 22. This week’s prize is $10 paypal credits sponsored by Jared’s Mum of Mumwrites.

I'm sorry but this post has been put off to give way to two other prior posts. Anyway, to continue with the Child Development series of posts, this one is about the Preschool or Nursery stage.  My youngest daughter is presently at this stage. She's turning 3 years old come January and she can really be described in two big words "Imitator" and "Discoverer."

Preschool / Nursery (2-3 Years Old) - Imitation and Discovery

Angel at 2 y.o.
Physically. A preschooler is very active and needs to engage in many kinds of motor activities. Angel used to just watch her siblings play and run around, but now she's running together with them. She also likes to dance with them and you'll be surprised at how she can climb up something and jump.

Mentally.  Grown-ups should provide preschoolers with many opportunities to discover the world through the senses. They have a limited span of attention, so the more varied the activities, so much better. Many still find it difficult to express what they want because their spoken words are still limited. So, mums and dads should continue to learn and understand how they communicate through actions and signs.

I'm actually amazed at the development of Angel because beginning age 2 she can already communicate very well. Though sometimes, she still points a lot and grabs my arms to bring me somewhere she wants.

Socially and Emotionally. A preschooler's world is still the home and other familiar places. In a different place, the child becomes self-centered and fearful. He would rather play alone than play with others. He have the tendency to say that everything he sees or touches is his. He doesn't like to be around a lot of people for fear that his parents might leave him. Slowly, he wants to be independent but still goes back to behavior of infancy from time to time. He still needs help getting dressed, putting on socks, tying shoe laces, buttoning my shirt, and others.

I commonly hear Angel say "This is Mine" with whatever she touches and whatever toys she sees other children touches. The friends of her siblings are complaining that Angel always says everything is hers.  Though this is normal at this stage, parents can start to teach preschoolers the concept of sharing and ownership.  Angel also likes to dress herself. Sometimes, she puts on a dress with the front side on the back and how proud she is that she's able to dress herself. I just smile and help her fix it.

Spiritually. The preschooler learn about God in different ways but he learns the most by looking at the people around him and he likes to imitate what they do. So grown-ups should really watch out what they do. When the child sees that grown-ups show the reality of God in their lives through words and action, he begins to believe there is God. He likes to hear stories about God in simple language especially when there are pictures to go with it. He can understand simple concepts like God loves him, the church is God's house where he learns about Jesus; the Bible is a very special book of God;  and he can talk to God just like dad and mom talks to God using simple prayers.

I always hear Angel sing songs we sing in church. And though some words are not clear, she's really amazing that she can sing together with her sisters. She knows how to sing "Lord, I offer my life to You" and "Mighty to Save." She can even memorize a very long Bible verse with actions which I taught to the other children in Sunday school. The child's spiritual training really begins while they are still young.

Next post we'll be learning about the Early childhood stage or Kindergartner.

Travel Nurses Needed in the U.S.

I have many friends who are working as nurses here in the Middle East. Many of them are happy with the relatively high pay, the free accommodation and the free airfare they receive for working here. There are also many who are using their work experience here as stepping stone to moving on to other countries such as the U.S., U.K. and New Zealand.

I've read from an article in NurseTogether.com, an online community for Filipino nurses, that the U.S. is currently experiencing a shortage of nurses. However, Filipino nurses have difficulty breaking into their nursing industry right now because of the strict immigration laws. So, what is the U.S. doing to augment their need for more nurses?

American nurse image from Wikimedia
Travel Nurse jobs have become popular in the U.S. because of this shortage in nurses. Travel Nurse jobs usually entail travelling from one place to another where their services are needed. Each temporary assignment lasts about 8 weeks long and can be renewed. The pay for this type of nursing job is higher (depending on skill level, pay can be as high as $50 per hour) and is packaged with relocation assistance, free housing and other bonuses.

For some, this is a great opportunity to travel to different places not just for work but also for some fun and adventure. Of course, this is not for every kind of nurse especially those who prefer to have a more permanent and long-term job. One can find some regular nurse job in the jobs board of AllNurses.com. But to registered nurses (RN) or licensed practicing nurses (LPN) including our Filipino nurses who are already in the U.S., this may be a good opportunity to look into. To know more about Travel Nurse jobs, a more detailed information is available from www.travelnursing.org.

How to Do Face Painting - Hulk and Pirate

Yesterday, my sons had their Halloween party in school. They went as a pirate and as the Incredible Hulk.

I am not really a professional face painter. So, what I just do is look for face painted images online and try to imitate them.

For face painting the simple pirate look,
  • I painted the eye patch.
  • I put the scar on the lower left cheek.
  • I put a thick eyebrow over the right eye.
  • Lastly, I added the mustache (You could add a beard too).
Then, I just looked for a big handkerchief and tied it over his head. He wore a white tops/satin polo and satin (gold, any color would do) pants then I tied a sash around the waist.

For face painting the hulk look,
  • I put green face paint on the left side of the face. (It was actually much easier to put green eye shadow all over the face than using the face paint)
  • I drew a dividing stitch on the center of the face.
  • I drew the mouth with big white teeth.
  • I put thick eye brows over the left eye. Then added some black lines.
  • (Initially, I was going to leave the other half of the face unpainted to emphasize that the Hulk has two identities but then I also put light green face paint on the other half.)
  • I also put some green paint on the neck and hands.

For the costume,
I looked for green long sleeves. Then, I looked for an old shirt and cut off triangles on the sleeves and the bottom of the shirt. He also wore green (should have been purple) 3/4 pants. I didn't put tears on the pants, (sayang kasi) it's still brand new.

Here are some other face paints I took pictures of during the Halloween party in my kids school.
